Most Australian's tend to keep their money in either a bank or financial institution. You can open an account with an Australian institution within 6 weeks of your arrival with just your passport as identification, after 6 weeks
however you will need extra forms of identification.
 
If you have just arrived in Australia you can use  travellers cheques or another negotiable form of currency such as Australian or US dollars, you can
exchange currency at most international airports.
